Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — During the Jackson County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday evening (September 23), the board heard from Drain Commissioner Geoffrey Snyder in relation to Waste Management’s landfill on McGill Road. That location is the only Type II landfill in Jackson County.
Drain Commissioner Snyder explained that a vertical expansion of the landfill was required to extend its lifespan beyond 1 year, and that the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) initially denied a construction permit because they interpreted the expansion as a lateral one.
According to Drain Commissioner Snyder, the department changed their stance following an appeal of the decision to deny the construction permit.
A motion to approve that letter to be signed by Board Chairman Steve Shotwell passed unanimously.
