Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — During their meeting on Tuesday evening, Jackson City Council Approved a lead service line replacement contract and subsequent change order.
The initial contract with SWT Excavating, Inc. is at a cost of $3,292,663 in Drinking Water State Revolving Fund money, with the change order adding $760,383 to the contract.
The City of Jackson has secured approximately $5M in state Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) financing for the replacement of water service lines to comply with the State’s Lead and Copper Rule.
These DWSRF funds pay for both contract construction and engineering costs.
Since the low bid provided by SWT Excavating, Inc. was lower than the City Engineer’s estimate, the contract without the change order would have only utilized a portion of the available funds.
City Engineer Troy White explained why the change order was brought to the council.
City leadership says the change order adds funding for the replacement of approximately 112 lead service lines.
City Communications Manager Christina Crouch says that city residents that want their lead service line replacements done faster can sign up for those on the city’s website.
City Council also approved the sale of two lots at 755 and 757 Tomlinson Street to AgriCon, LLC for a total of $600 for single-family homes to be built.
The city will also recognize “No Mow May” this year, in which residents may choose to not mow their backyards in May to help pollinators.
It was stressed at the meeting that this voluntary, and city residents can still mow as often as they please.
