City Council Approves Funding Reallocation for Habitat For Humanity Affordable Housing Construction

Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — Jackson City Council has approved a Substantial Amendment to their Annual Action Plan with the reallocation of reserve Home Investment Partnership Program (HOME) funds for fiscal years 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 totaling $200,000 to go toward the construction of an affordable housing unit in collaboration with the Greater Jackson Habitat for Humanity.

City Grant Administrator Cory Mays explained during the meeting, in which a required public hearing on the amendment was held, that this reallocation does not impact the scope of the work described by the plan, but the use of old money requires approval from the council.

Mays also gave a brief overview of what the $200,000 is going toward: the construction of a home on Clinton Street to be sold to an income qualified family earning a combined 80% or less of the Area Median Income.

The amendment says that “Habitat for Humanity has a strong track record of success in the City of Jackson, including the recent completion of four new homes in the Deland Project (Franklin Street, immediately South of the YMCA), and various new construction projects utilizing private and state grant funds.”

Jackson Mayor Daniel Mahoney gave his appreciation in regard to the housing efforts that Habitat for Humanity has taken up on in the City of Jackson.
