City of Jackson to Give Up to 100 Free Ring Doorbell Cameras With “Eyes on the Block” Program

Share: Copied!

Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The City of Jackson has announced the launch of their “Eyes on the Block” program in Wards 1 and 2, in which up to 100 Ring doorbell cameras with a 1-year subscription will be given to residents who want to participate for free.

City Communications Manager Christina Crouch told WKHM that the program is designed to create partnerships between community members and law enforcement to deter, detect, and help solve crime.

Crouch said that the Ring cameras that are distributed will function the exact same way as a Ring camera bought from a store or online, with no direct monitoring or automatic access ability from the city or law enforcement.

She stated that any video sharing from a resident would be with that resident volunteering to do so, with the ability to choose to not share their video.

Some city residents have expressed other concerns related to the program including landlords requiring tenants to participate, and if the cameras would be used beyond residential purposes.

Two information meetings about the program are scheduled to take place next week, the first one happening at the MLK Center at Adrian Street on Tuesday (February 17) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Ward 1 Councilmember Arlene Robinson.

The second meeting is on Thursday (February 19) at the Boos Recreation Center at Gilbert Street from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Ward 2 Councilmember Freddie Dancy.

Residents who have questions about the program are encouraged to attend.

Residents who would like more information are also encouraged to email eyesontheblock@cityofjackson.org.

The Eyes on the Block program was approved by Jackson City Council on November 18, 2025.
