Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — The Summit Township Board of Trustees has approved a conditional use permit for a battery energy storage system to be built in the township by AYPA Power.
Township Supervisor John Griffin said that the decision was driven by the reality that if the township did not approve it, the state of Michigan would have instead.
Griffin said that by approving it at the local level, Summit Township was able to have the structure built under conditions that are friendlier to its residents.
If the build goes as planned, the township will receive a $1,300,000 grant from the state, with that amount becoming only $500,000 going to the township if the project was denied at the local level.
The permit was approved by a 5-0 vote during the October 21 Summit Township Board of Trustees meeting.
