Jackson, Mich. (WKHM) — A Jackson woman who was found to be living in a home with 16 dead animals at various stages of decomposition in 2024 according to Jackson County Animal Control has pled guilty to one felony charge of animal cruelty and six misdemeanors.
The Jackson County Animal Shelter says she was posing as “animal rescue” and collected pets to “rehome.” Court records show the woman to be 21-year-old Makayla Stefaniuk.
Shelter Director Lydia Sattler says they were diligent in bringing this case in front of county prosecutors.

Sattler also claims there is evidence that she has done this in other homes, and that she was actively seeking more animals while living amongst dead ones.

It is a tragic reminder that not everyone claiming to provide pet services can be taken at their word, with Sattler giving advice on how pet owners can be sure who they are working with is legitimate.

Director Sattler thanked the Jackson community for their continued support, without which they would be unable to bring attention to these situations.

The shelter also thanked Allegra Marketing for printing photographs that were used for evidence. Stefaniuk is scheduled to be sentenced on November 12.
