East Lansing, Mich. — A 43-year-old man with no known ties to Michigan State University is now dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after opening fire on campus last night, killing three MSU students and wounding five. The five injured remain in critical condition.

The first shots were fired around 8:18 p.m. Monday night at Berkey Hall, prompting a campus-wide shelter-in-place protocol. The shooting continued at MSU Union, not far from Berkey Hall.

MSU Police and Public Safety Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman, visibly shaken from the incident, implored people to stay away from campus and not to add fuel to social media rumors during his first press conference of the evening.

He later went on to confirm that the shooter had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 5 miles from campus, and although law enforcement would continue to investigate, sheltering in place was no longer necessary.
